Branch History

St. Louis County Library Headquarters moved from Natural Bridge to 1640 South Lindbergh in late 1959. The new facility was much more spacious than the previous location, and was in a part of the County that was easily accessible via Interstate 40. The building was, more importantly, designed to be a library, unlike the previous location which had been a car dealership.

Although the building has not been significantly remodeled since 1990, small changes have been made to make the public areas reflect the needs of current users. One of the meeting rooms has been made into a computer lab. Many of the reference room's shelves have given way for a large bank of public PCs which offer access not only to the Internet, but also to a wide array of subscription databases. Self-service checkout stations and holds shelves allow customers to help themselves quickly and easily. Staff members are available throughout the library to help customers find material or to work on special projects. The children's area has toys and furniture where parents can have fun with their children without worrying about being quiet.

As it has since 1960, St. Louis County Library Headquarters houses the largest collection of current library material in every format with trained professionals to assist with research and recommendations.
