Pulitzer Arts Foundation
Situated in St. Louis' Grand Center district, the Pulitzer presents changing exhibitions and engages in a variety of programming initiatives involving the visual, literary, and performing arts.
Pulitzer Arts Foundation invites you to experience Kota: Digital Excavations in African Art, a powerful installation of nearly fifty Kota reliquary guardian figures originally used to protect the bones of deceased ancestors, along with the new digital tools created to uncover new information about these enigmatic objects. Co-curated by an African art specialist and a computer engineer, this exhibition builds on a search engine and series of algorithms that led to an enhanced understanding of these objects’ origins and functions, revealing new information to historians and scholars. The exhibition also features a hi-tech, immersive digital experience that animates this extensive database and invites visitors to look more closely at similarities or differences in the works on view. As the Pulitzer’s first game developers-in-residence, St. Louis-based software designers Rampant Interactive will lead a series of participatory and community-driven projects in the Kota ProtoLab, an audience-responsive design studio that will occupy one of the Pulitzer’s new lower-level galleries and explore the role of data in art, history, and everyday life.
