Central Library has stood as the cornerstone of the St. Louis Public Library's 17 branch libraries. 2012 marked the grand reopening of Central Library in downtown St. Louis after an extensive two-year renovation, marking its 100 year anniversary.
The archiecturally significant central branch of the St. Louis Library, designed by architect Cass Gilbert in a modified Italian Renaissance style and featuring beautiful stained glass windows and hand-stenciled ceilings, is actually several libraries in one. In addition to the main library collections, there are also libraries devoted to humanities, history and genealogy, fine arts, pop culture, rare books, large print, and books-on-tape.

The central branch also offers Bosnian, African, Hispanic, German, and Asian residents access to books and films in their own languages. Children love to check out toys from thecommunity toy box, as well as books from different countries, available from the international book box.
