HIP-HOP AND YOU DON’T STOP
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28 | 10AM–1PM

In August 2023 hip-hop music turned 50 years old—that’s half a century of influence on music, fashion, and more! Families are invited to join hip-hop dance workshops, decorate their own mic craft, and learn about the history of the music through Step into the Story: Hip-Hop, an interactive large-scale story experience in the Des Lee Auditorium.

10:00am–1:00pm | Make a mic craft and try out our graffiti chalk wall. Don’t forget to check out our St. Louis Sound hallway exhibit on the second floor and take a picture with our Nelly standup and hip-hop–themed photo op.
10:30–11:15am | Step into the Story: Hip-Hop Hooray is a fun and interactive large-scale story time in the Des Lee Auditorium featuring The Roots of Rap by Carole Boston Weatherford and more. Join us afterward for limited supply giveaway of the book I Got the Rhythm by Conie Schofield-Morrison, generously provided by Ready Readers. Great for ages 2–11.

Adults, come back at 5:30–10:00pm for Thursday Nights at the Museum: A Half Century of Hip-Hop, a party with St. Louis’s “God Pops of Hip-Hop” DJ G.Wiz and his friends that honors the evolution of hip-hop in St. Louis and pays respect to the music, dance, art, and fashion of hip-hop culture.

And don’t forget to join us on January 18 for Thursday Nights at the Museum: St. Louis Women of Hip-Hop. View the documentary I Am Hip Hop and hear a conversation with St. Louis women who have made their mark on the industry for years.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29 | 10AM–1PM

As St. Louisan Chuck Berry once sang, “Get your kicks on Route 66.” Take a trip with us as we learn about the history of the planes, trains, and automobiles that helped us traverse our great nation. Check out our travel-themed artifact touch table, go on a vehicle scavenger hunt, make road-trip-themed crafts, and don’t forget story time. Buckle in!

10:00am–1:00pm | Take our vehicle-themed exhibit scavenger hunt, make a road trip–themed craft, and touch real artifacts at our travel-themed teaching collection table. Plus, visit Reedy Press for a variety of fun family activities based on the new book Missouri Weird and Wonderful.
10:30–11:00am | Head to the back of the History Clubhouse for Storytelling in the Museum for ages 2–5.
11:15am–12:00pm | Test your Missouri trivia knowledge in a live game show from Reedy Press, Do You Know MO?, or just join the audience to watch.

THE SHELDON PERFORMS A JAZZ STORY
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30 | 10AM–1PM

Experience the story of jazz, a uniquely American creation—from Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday to Dave Brubeck and Herbie Hancock—through local musicians and educators from the Sheldon. Although designed especially for children in elementary and middle school, this performance is just as engaging for adults. Create take-home crafts, such as a paper “stained glass” window decoration inspired by our Coloring STL exhibit and more.

10:00am–1:00pm | Create a paper “stained glass” ornament and snowflake craft and do our music Mad Libs activity.
11:00am–12:00pm | Enjoy A Jazz Story by musicians from the Sheldon in a special program suitable for children and adults!

For those of us who can’t stay awake until midnight, join us for a New Year’s countdown when the clock strikes noon at our Noon Year’s Eve Celebration on Sunday, December 31!

ASL interpretation is available for programs with two weeks' advance notice. Please email access@mohistory.org to request ASL interpretation or with other accessibility questions.
