Summer Family Fun Series - Missouri History Museum

Head to the Museum on Wednesdays and Fridays every week in June and July for summer fun. Enjoy a variety of family activities, including crafts, performances, and scavenger hunts on Wednesdays, and then visit us again on Fridays for Storytelling in the Museum and Cuentos en el Museo programs at 10:30am, followed by a two-hour drop-in craft workshop. The Summer Family Fun Series is great for children ages 2–12!

FRIDAY, JUNE 2 | STORYTELLING IN THE MUSEUM: PRIDE MONTH STORIES + CRAFT WORKSHOP

Celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month with these stories about queer families and historic heroes! Possible books to be read include: Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag’Twas the Night Before Pride, and Who Are You? The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7 | JAPANESE ST. LOUIS

This program is presented in collaboration with Japan America Society.

Explore the history of Japanese St. Louisans and learn about the Japanese American influence on local architecture during a special family mini tour of Coloring STL. Get to know traditional Japanese arts like ikebana (flower arranging) and kamishibai (storytelling). Enjoy an interactive dance show and take a photo in a digital booth (printed photos are $3). You can also try your hand at calligraphy and make a koinobori (fish-shaped windsock).

FRIDAY, JUNE 9 | STORYTELLING IN THE MUSEUM: PREHISTORIC ANIMALS + CRAFT WORKSHOP

Sure, dinosaurs are cool, but what about the other critters that were here before us? (Don’t worry, we’ll read about dinosaurs, too!) Possible books to be read include: Mammoths on the MoveGakky Two-Feet, and A Dinosaur’s Day: Diplodocus Finds Its Family.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14 | JUNETEENTH AND BLACK MUSIC MONTH

This program is presented in collaboration with Fundisha Enterprises.

June is an important month in Black history: It’s when we celebrate both Juneteenth (June 19) and Black Music Month! Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Learn about a local connection to Clara Brown, a pioneer and formerly enslaved person, through a musical presented by Mama Lisa and Fundisha Enterprises. Take a hip-hop workshop with the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, enjoy a drum circle with an African djembe, and much more.

We also are happy to announce that our new, free Juneteenth and Black Missourian Freedom Fight resource kit is available digitally for families and educators. Limited hard copies are also available on request.

11:00am–12:00pm | Join us in the Lee Auditorium for a special production of Clara Brown with Mama Lisa and Fundisha Enterprises. This musical explores the true story of Clara Brown, a formerly enslaved woman who was a western pioneer and philanthropist. Best for ages 5 and older, but all are welcome.

12:30–1:00pm | Get your body moving with a hip-hop workshop for all ages led by Rob, a dancer from The Repertory Theatre.

10:00am–1:00pm | Explore buildings important to local Black history in the Coloring STL exhibit. Complete a scavenger hunt to win a prize! Learn more about dances of the African diaspora and try out instruments in the Karen Goering Classroom. Plus, color pictures of Katherine Dunham and Josephine Baker. Visit our African American History Initiative (AAHI) table to learn more about what the Missouri Historical Society is doing to collect and honor our local Black history. Pick up a coloring sheet with a link to our digital resource guide Black Missourians and the Fight for Freedom: From Slavery to Juneteenth to the Exodusters.

FRIDAY, JUNE 16 | STORYTELLING IN THE MUSEUM: JUNETEENTH + CRAFT WORKSHOP

Happy Juneteenth! To commemorate the holiday, we’ll learn about past and present freedom jubilees. Possible books to be read include: Juneteenth for MazieFree at Last: A Juneteenth Poem, and The Juneteenth Story: Celebrating the End of Slavery in the United States.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21 | HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HISTORY CLUBHOUSE!

It’s been too long since we’ve celebrated the History Clubhouse’s birthday, so we are going to make up for lost time. Come out to meet the Clubhouse mascot, Glory the Gargoyle, and leave a Clubhouse memory. Be inspired by our exhibit team and design your own interactive exhibit. Don’t forget to join our dance party and make a party hat before you go!

11:00am–1:00pm | Get your face painted or an airbrush tattoo by Circus Kaput in the Schnucks Classroom.

10:00am–1:00pm | Color and decorate your own History Clubhouse birthday crown. Share your History Clubhouse stories on our memory board. Get crafty and make your own History Clubhouse or your own unique interactive exhibit for kids. Meet and take photos with Glory the Gargoyle, our History Clubhouse mascot. Go on a History Clubhouse scavenger hunt.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28 | DECADES

It’s always a blast to the past inside the Missouri History Museum, but on this date we’ll learn all about the decades from the 1950s to the 1980s. Feel free to dress up in one of these decades’ funkiest fashions and maybe even win a prize for best costume! (Adults are invited to participate, too.) Learn about the civil rights movement in the Reflections gallery, construct your own ’60s icon (the Gateway Arch), make a vintage toy, and more—including a performance by Fanfare in the Des Lee Auditorium.

10:45am, 12:00pm | Journey through American pop music history in an-all ages concert with local band Fanfare.

10:00am–1:00pm | Are you in a retro costume? Make sure to enter the History Clubhouse raffle for a prize! Make your own collage craft of a 1960s icon, the Gateway Arch, near the entrance to our architecture exhibit Coloring STL. “Play the past” with childhood games from history, including marbles and a version of the Native American game chunkey. Plus, color paper dolls inspired by the Missouri Historical Society Collections and catch an episode of Romper Room, a St. Louis retro classic TV show. Learn about the local 1950s and 1960s civil rights movement in our Seeking St. Louis: Reflections exhibit. Totally cool! Experience mall culture of the 1980s and 1990s with a special pretend-play experience where you can dress up, hang out at the “food court,” make a paper Build-a-Bear (a St. Louis creation), and take an old-school family photo.

FRIDAY, JUNE 30 | STORYTELLING IN THE MUSEUM: CHILL SUMMER + CRAFT WORKSHOP

Remember when it was cold? We don’t either! Join us for a “cool” story time. Possible books to be read include: Go, Sled! Go!So Much Snow; and Seaside Stroll.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 5 | SOY ST. LOUIS

¡Bienvenidos! Come to the Missouri History Museum for its annual bilingual event with activities in Spanish and English for children and families. Explore the Soccer City exhibit with a Spanish-English scavenger hunt and test out your skills on the Museum’s lawn with Club Atletico. Stay for a special bilingual story time and performance by Ballet 314, plus a bilingual book giveaway (while supplies last).

WEDNESDAY, JULY 12 | GERMAN ST. LOUIS

This program is presented in collaboration with the German Language Association and German Cultural Society of St. Louis.

Germans are an important part of the fabric of our region. Come enjoy a special interactive Step Into the Story: A Grimm Fairy Tale in German and English. Learn about surprising products and words that come from the German language, explore some of the history of German St. Louis with a family-friendly mini-tour of our exhibits, and then dance with the kindertanzgruppe! Before you go, be sure to make a pretend lebkuchenherzen, or gingerbread heart necklace.

FRIDAY, JULY 14 | STORYTELLING IN THE MUSEUM: CHILDHOOD FAVES + CRAFT WORKSHOP

Nothing beats a classic, so let’s read some of our favorite stories together. Possible books to read include: Where the Wild Things AreDon’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 19 | CHINESE ST. LOUIS

This program is presented in collaboration with the Chinese Language School and Chinese Modern Language School.

Chinese Americans have been part of the St. Louis community longer than you may think. Learn more about Chinese St. Louisans, enjoy traditional dance and martial arts, pick up a few Chinese words, and make some culturally inspired art.

FRIDAY, JULY 21 | STORYTELLING IN THE MUSEUM: ART + CRAFT WORKSHOP

These songs and stories about art and artists will inspire you to create something great. Possible books to be read include: Off the WallWoven of the World, and Bottle Tops: The Art of El Anatsui.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 26 | BACK TO SCHOOL BASH

It’s time to celebrate another year of learning together at Missouri History Museum at our second annual Back to School Bash. While you’re here, explore our touch table about school of the past, get an airbrush tattoo, snap a photo in front of our school-inspired backdrop, and make a craft. Adults can check out our community resource fair. Enjoy some music with family and friends, then pick up a free book (while they last).

FRIDAY, JULY 28 | CUENTOS EN EL MUSEO: MASCOTAS/PETS + CRAFT WORKSHOP

Dogs! Cats! Birds, oh my! Let’s celebrate our pets with books and songs all about them. Possible books to be read include: Mi MascotaEl Sueño de Chocolate, and Lola Quiere un Gato.
