VIRTUAL EVENT: Online STEM Workshop - Ocean Acidification Experiment at 2pm Pacific from Harbor WildWatch

*The event has already taken place on this date: Tue, 06/16/2020
Ocean acidification is a threat to many species living in the ocean. Join Science Specialist Stena for an interactive, Facebook LIVE lesson about what ocean acidification is and why it's a threat to shell building species like clams and oysters. Gather up the supplies below beforehand, and tune in at 2 p.m. on Harbor WildWatch's main Facebook page. Interaction highly encouraged!

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Supplies:
- Vinegar
- Cups/small containers/ice cube tray
- Materials you predict will dissolve in an acidic environment. Stena will be using a variety of materials including: wood chips, limestone, granite, clam shells, plastic beads, chalk, tums, coral, seaweed, aragonite sand, and silica sand.
- Paper
- Pencil

In this lesson we will be making predictions about what materials contain calcium carbonate and then put those predictions to the test by observing whether or not they dissolve in vinegar. We will relate our observations to why ocean acidification has a detrimental impact on sea creatures that rely on calcium carbonate to build their shells.

We are in this together! Every week, Harbor WildWatch will offer three free, educational videos. These videos will be a combination of livestreams and pre-recorded workshops that explore our natural environment, provide STEM learning opportunities, and offer activity ideas for at-home learning.

Tune into our Facebook and YouTube channels on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to catch our biologists providing fun educational videos for all ages. Note that a Facebook account is not required to view any videos on Facebook.
