A few things to know:
-
The iconic phrase "E.T. phone home" became synonymous with the film. However, the actual line spoken by the character is "E.T. home phone."
-
The portrayal of E.T. was achieved through a combination of puppetry and animatronics. The puppetry was masterfully handled by expert puppeteers, including multiple little people, to create the endearing and lifelike movements of the alien character.
-
The film's famous scene where E.T. is lured with a trail of candy popularized Reese's Pieces. After the success of the movie, sales of Reese's Pieces skyrocketed, marking one of the earliest instances of product placement in a major Hollywood film.
