FIRST FRIDAY: Doctor Who
During the final First Friday of 2023, on December 1 (5-9 p.m.), the Science Center will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Doctor Who fantasy/sci-fi television series with several events designed to help explain the science behind this science-fiction favorite. Activities will include a meet/greet and discussion with James Sutton (an actor and prop maker with the show), a costume and trivia contest*, games, screening of favorite episodes and much more.
The Science Center’s Doctor Who display is located on the bridge connecting the Main Campus to the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. The display features screen-used artifacts, archival replicas and hand-drawn, production-made concept art and sketches to provide an inside look into the creation of the television series. MUST-SEE items in this exhibit include:
- One of only three screen-used TARDIS filming props in the United States, and the only one available on public display. A TARDIS is the device The Doctor uses for time-travel in the series and is depicted as a 1960s British Police Telephone Box.
- Items from the largest private collection of sonic screwdriver material in the world.
- Several screen-used sonics, including the oldest sonic known to exist.
*The winner of the night's trivia contest will receive a screen-used prop as their prize, and the costume contest winners will be able to take their photo inside the Science Center's TARDIS.
