Shelter Buddies Reading Program

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 12/08/2024
The Shelter Buddies Reading Program was designed to help our shelter dogs become more adoptable. Reading to the dogs helps to bring comfort to and reduce the anxiety of shelter pets, and it nurtures empathy in children. Participants sit outside of the dog’s kennel and read to them.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

At the Humane Society of Missouri, our story dates back to 1870. But in early 2016, we added a new chapter that we are eager to share with others all over the world: the Shelter Buddies Reading Program.

The Shelter Buddies Reading Program is a mutually beneficial experience designed to help shy, anxious shelter animals feel more comfortable around people by having young advocates read to them. We want to encourage the animals to approach the front of the kennel when visitors and potential adopters are present. Animals who approach the kennel front get adopted more quickly, thus reducing the average length of stay.

For our young volunteers, the Shelter Buddies Reading Program helps foster compassion and empathy, while providing a supportive environment in which to develop their reading skills. In addition, the program provides children the opportunity to make a positive impact by helping animals in need.

Thank you for your interest in this program and for encouraging your child to put their "compassion into action" through volunteering.

Kindest regards,

Your friends in the HSMO Education Department
