Sunday Fundays at St. Lucas United Church of Christ

A fresh take on Vacation Bible School invites people of all ages to come learn something new together

Sunset Hills, MO: Mark your calendars now for St. Lucas UCC's Sunday Fundays! Come and join in the fun as we put a new twist on VBS and gather ALL AGES together to explore some of God’s most interesting creatures. Each Sunday will kick off with some music, a short devotion followed by a guest speaker, and end with a hands-on activity for everyone present. (It is also rumored that there will be some snacks available!)

The events scheduled are for Sundays, June 26th, July 31st, and August 28th. The events will start in the Social Hall of St. Lucas at 5 PM. The doors will open at 4 PM and you are welcome to bring a picnic basket to share with your family prior to the start of our event. There will be some folding chairs available but you may want to bring a lawn chair or blanket so you can get close to the action.

JUNE 26

June 26th will focus on our feathered friends, the owls, with a presentation by Brenda Hente. Brenda Hente has been observing and documenting owls in the St. Louis area since 2010, when she first had a pair of Great Horned Owls living in her backyard. She researches raptors of all kinds and has studied under world-renowned ornithologists, Scott Weidensaul and Dr. Stephen Kress, at Maine Audubon’s Hog Island camp. She is also a contracted Instructor for the Missouri Botanical Garden, giving classes on owls and raptors. Brenda is an educator by day, teaching middle school science and history.

Have you ever dissected an owl pellet? Now’s your chance. It will be a HOOT!

JULY 31

On July 31st Serengeti Steve will bring his Reptile Experience to St. Lucas. There will be snakes, spiders and maybe even an alligator. Don’t miss this chance to interact with some of God’s creepy and crawly creations!

"Serengeti Steve performs over 600 shows a year and has appeared on NBC's "America's Got Talent", making it to the Las Vegas finals, as well as being a member of the famous Guinness Book of World Records. Along with numerous television appearances, Steve has performed for a variety of celebrities and has worked all types of crowds and venues.

Serengeti Steve began his career in herpetology over 25 years ago and has been entertaining crowds ever since. He has raised and maintained over 200 species of reptiles and arachnids from around the globe, including some of the world’s deadliest animals, like cobras and mambas to alligators & Komodo dragons. Originally, Steve's job was extracting snake venom for cancer research laboratories. He has traveled the world in search of reptiles, amphibians, and reptiles from remote deserts to rain forests. Although Steve's love of all animals is high on the list, his first love and driving force will always be entertaining the children and adults attending his performances. Steve's greatest asset is his ability to combine a thrilling yet comical presentation which involves audience participation. The attendees will be given the opportunity to help hold these unique creatures in a safe environment, but don't worry, Steve's deadly animals will not be brought or used for the crowd’s interaction, although they can be brought for his separate "Reptile Xtreme" presentations."

AUGUST 28

Who has ever seen the birdman tablet from Cahokia? How about the Key Marco cat from Florida? Here’s your opportunity. Join us for our final summer Sunday Funday, August 28th as we enter the history of the Indigenous people with archeologist, Natalia Moonier.

Natalia Moonier is an archaeologist who has been in love with the field for ten years and counting. A graduate of Cor Jesu Academy (’17), Natalia’s particular interests include North American and Mesoamerican archaeology, with emphases on iconography and the relationships between landscape, ideology, and ancestral memory. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the College of Wooster (’21), where she researched her Independent Study, titled Narrative and Image as Memory: An Alternate History of the Alton Piasa Using Indigenous Contexts. Through the years, Natalia has participated in research and projects in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Guatemala.
